Local Employment Projected to Rise for Mining Developments in Queensland and Papua New Guinea

23 June 2020

Over the past twenty years, CEQ has delivered some of the construction industry’s most complex and diverse electrical projects. With the ability to continuously perform to a high standard within challenging environments, CEQ has established the right DNA to succeed in the mining sector, both in Australia and in the Indo-Pacific.

Through the safe and successful implementation of the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of electrical works on various sites in Australia and abroad, CEQ’s capability within the mining industry has matured into a core business offering that is thriving.

To date, we have delivered end-to-end electrical and engineering solutions on projects across Gold, Oil, Metalliferous, Gas and Coal mining projects.

CEQ has performed the following scope items across some of the industries largest mining operations;

  • Electrical Engineering & Design
  • High Voltage
  • Reticulation and Cable Management
  • Control Systems (SCADA &PLC)
  • General Electrical Installations (Light & Power)
  • Custom Switchboard & MCC Manufacturing
  • Generator Supply and Install
  • Power Analysis and Control
  • Material & Equipment Supply
  • Hazardous Area installations and certification
  • Communications – Infrastructure, Data & Telecoms
  • Critical shutdown and asset changeovers

Mining Electrical Contractors

Though we have acquired and carried out projects in the most prevalent mining industries, we can execute top-tier electrical work in all areas.

Managing Director, Ryan Johnson stated;

“We take great pride in our long-term client relationships. These have been developed over a very long time and reflect the enormous efforts our team goes to in order to make sure the job is done right at every level. CEQ has a high quality culture and this culture has led to repeat business over a long period of time. This gives us reason to be optimistic in the coming years”.

Safety Leading to Security

Our exemplary safety record and reliable relationships have contributed to over 20 years’ success in delivering mining projects across Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. This is due to the stringent methods we operate under, which provides confidence to all parties concerning the standards of safety we apply to the high-risk environments we operate in.

We have recently been awarded the Dalrymple Bay Coal terminal stacker replacement project in Mackay, North Queensland. CEQ is continuing its work at the BMA Goonyella mine with several projects currently in progress. This progress comes as a result of a largely successful 2019 with the delivery of the BMA Goonyella Horizontal Belt Fitter Installation.

With our mining developments expected to increase in Queensland and Papua New Guinea, it is a safe assumption that demand for local employment for electrical contractors will rise, which could provide work for a large number of new team members for CEQ.

Reliable Relationships Contribute to Success of Mining Projects

We are specialists in the short-notice mobilisation of electricians and engineers to remote mining sites, as we have the resources to mobilise quickly and effectively with a highly experienced project team.

Our Mining Business unit specialises in the delivery of mining projects domestically and internationally. These projects are continuing to experience success through the dependable relationships we have with our broad range of delivery partners, who have proven experience in mining project delivery and working with CEQ.

BMA Goonyella Horizontal Belt Fitter Installation

The Goonyella Riverside mine is a large, open cut coking coal mine in the Bowen Basin. We were contracted by WALZ group to:

  • Install all electrical and instrumentation – including all the pneumatics for the 4th belt filter press
  • Conveyor drive upgrades
  • Cable Management
  • Design and Engineering
  • Instrumentation supply and installation
  • Motor control centre extension
  • Commissioning support

Hail Creek industrial area upgrade

Forming a major industrial upgrade at Hail Creek Mine in Queensland, CEQ performed three separate projects:

  • Supply and installation of several 25m Area Lighting Towers
  • Civil works for the extensive power supply sub-main run
  • Design, manufacture and installation of the re-configured DB28 low voltage distribution board

All projects were completed within the time and operational constraints forecasted by the operating mine. CEQ demonstrated commitment to safety, with the project recording no lost time injuries, to the praise of the mine operators. Click here to view our completed mining projects.

Sag Ball Feeder Mill

CEQ executed electrical and instrumentation works on the Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill’s Ball Feeder project in Lihir, PNG.

The works were for Newcrest as the mine operator and CEQ had the privilege to work closely with the WALZ team, making the project a success for all parties.

Combined with risk reduction in manual handling labour, the project introduced innovations and technology, as well as the continued rollout of initiatives from other Newcrest mine sites. The project reflected Newcrest’s safety and Sustainability, Operating Performance and Technology and Innovation pillars which helped in the following ways:

  • Made work easier and safer
  • Increased productivity and provided an optimum ball charge to the grinding mills for increased core processing tonnage

CEQ utilised and up-skilled local electrical workers throughout these projects. The site team was commended for commitment to quality as a result.

How we Support the Indo-Pacific Electrical Industry and Local Communities is that of leadership and adaptability.

We believe that CEQ has an ethical and moral responsibility to our team and the communities we work in, to support them and their families to live their best life.

Our causes support mental health, safety and wellbeing through:

Indo-Pacific local support

Due to our ability to provide experienced electrical engineering contractors in developing countries, we are identifying ways to help local communities in need outside of our contracted projects, including charitable events and donations.

Papua New Guinea community support

During our time spent in Papua New Guinea since 2014, we have been involved in the rewiring of a fire-ravaged community, and also charity drives to provide cricket equipment to a local club.

Pacific Skills Initiative

Together, with the Australia Pacific Technical Coalition (APTC), CEQ will provide trade certificate training to Pacific industry workers. Our Pacific based apprentices will have the benefit of working and learning side by side with CEQ’s elite expatriate electricians with the opportunity to become fully qualified electricians through the APTC’s Australian standards recognised trade qualification.

CEQ provides:

  • Internally developed training and skills assessment;
  • Transfer of tacit knowledge
  • Recognition of Prior Learning assessments
  • Collaborative and supportive work environments
  • On the job skill development under the supervision of elite expatriate electricians;
  • Formal Recognition of non-accredited skillsets;
  • Mentoring and guidance to program participants.

CEQ facilitates:

  • 22 weeks electrical apprentices training program, delivered by APTC;
  • Training delivery in line with the Queensland Electrical Apprentice Curriculum as established by TAFE QLD International;
  • A training program accommodating 15 apprentices at any one time;
  • On-site training and experience through complex electrical works, large scale projects, and multi-industry exposure.
  • All administrative and logistics requirements.
